spinal tap

March 4, 2013

So one time when I was young and in my mid 20s I lived in a different town that almost all of my friends an away from my best friend. She needed spine surgeons. That is not true, I just needed to get something written about that. So she lived far away and just about every weekend I would drive down to my old hood and I would visit. I was driving down one day after work and I decided that I should call her. She was really sick and thought she had a fever so I stopped and got her something from the store. Turns out she had a terrible fever and was in a lot of pain in her back. This was a little alarming because she only has one kidney and that side was incredibly painful. So we went to the emergency room and had to wait a little while, but eventually she went in. She was then having to have just about every test on the planet to determine what was going on. After pain medication and a ton of blood tests, they decided to do a spinal tap. And I watched it and it was disgusting. That was the largest needle I have ever seen and she was a small person, I was surprised that that needle did not go through her whole body. Yuck. It was hard to watch. So then they never determined what it was, which was disappointing. She did not need minimally invasive spine surgery.

The Benefits of Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery

January 2, 2013

There are numerous benefits of minimally invasive spine surgery.  For starters, risks of infection and large cuts are scaled back to a minute picture.

Since only a small incision is made, there’s virtually little scarring resulting from the procedure, and most importantly, many spine related injuries can be resolved quickly. Have you experience lower back pain day in and day out? Then this type of surgery may reduce or eliminate the pain. How about neck, hip, groin or other forms or pain? The point is that patients nowadays have many more options to solve ailments, with less pain, and less time.

Tissue damage is minimal too, and in terms of costs, it is usually lower than traditional surgery. In addition, hospital stays are sometimes eliminated since many minimally invasive spine surgeries are performed at outpatient facilities. This basically means that patients won’t have to cove r the cost for overnight stays in expensive hospitals.

Since less bleeding occurs, there’s also less risk of infection.  After the operation, patients can carry on with everyday life, and in a pain free state after some time – of the procedure was successful.  A spine surgeon will examine the patient’s medical profile and conduct numerous tests to see the source of pain, before proceeding with any recommendations. Spine surgery is usually a last resort when medications don’t work and pain is unbearable.

This procedure still carries many risks however, so it’s important to choose a very qualified spine surgeon, who has studied, practiced and is certified in this field.

Researching Brain Surgery

November 28, 2012

We never thought that my friend would be having brain surgery.  It seemed like such a huge decision for her to deal with but she has been handling it all like a champ.  She showed incredible courage and tenacity as she moved forward into gathering information and making decisions about her surgery.  What sounded like a huge deal to all of us was actually explained to be Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery.  While we were happy to hear that the procedure was not as invasive as one would expect, so many of us had questions as I am sure my friend did as well.  My friend continued to talk with the doctors at Neurosurgery Denver and found that they answered a lot of her questions.  For those of us who are friends with her, we were really wondering how much this surgery would change her life after her recovery.  We found out that her life would change quite a bit, but not because of the surgery.  As it turned out, she would need to make some significant changes in order to avoid more surgery in the future.  My friend was incredibly active.  She could always be found snowboarding, hiking, or on a surfing trip in the summer. The doctor did not seem to think that any of these things were a good idea for her.  He continued to tell her of the risks given the particular condition she had developed in her back and brain.  She would have to be more careful from this point forward or risk more serious problems.

Massages for Alleviating Back Pain

August 16, 2012
Lower back pain is caused by a number of different reasons. I am sure you know someone who suffers from back pain or that you suffer from back pain yourself. Either way, back pain is quite common and stress in a main factor in what causes back pain. People deal with stress all the time. There is the stress of work, the stress of bills, the stress of children, the stress family, and the list goes on and on. There is a lot of stress out there and we all battle our own in our own ways. But when you bury that stress down and it does not get a constructive outlet, it stays with you. It doesn’t just disappear. That stress that you bury becomes a part of your muscles, it turns into the tension and then it affects your back muscles, neck muscles and even your shoulder muscles. It can also affect your heart, you head, and other parts of your body. Stress can make you sick and therefore needs a constructive outlet. Some people choose to pain or draw and others choose to play golf and basketball. It doesn’t matter what you do, as long as you are releasing stress. You could even get regular back massages. This is a great way to release stress because there are places in your body that can be pressed on that allow for instant stress release. If you have ever had a back massage than most likely you know what I am talking about. If you have never had a massage, try it out and you will see exactly what I am talking about. You do not have to go out and find spine surgeons who will implement minimally invasive spine surgery. You can get lower back pain relief simply by releasing some stress.
